阿尔玛逃离诺亚王之后，悔改了自己的罪，暗中教导阿宾纳代的话。许多相信的人来到一个叫摩尔门的地方，那里有一处清水的泉源，旁边有树林可以躲避王的搜寻。阿尔玛教导他们：如果你们愿意进入神的羊圈，愿意彼此担当重担，与哀伤的人同哀伤，安慰需要安慰的人，在任何时候、任何地方都为神作见证，那么受洗作为与神立约的见证有什么不可以呢？百姓听了都欢喜得拍起手来，说这正是他们心里的愿望。阿尔玛向神祈求能力，然后和第一个人一同进入水中，为他施洗，接着为许多人施洗。他们组织了基督的教会，人数增加到四百五十人左右。后来诺亚王发现了他们，派军队来攻打，阿尔玛就带着百姓逃进了旷野。

Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death, that ye may be redeemed of God, and be numbered with those of the first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life—
Now I say unto you, if this be the desire of your hearts, what have you against being baptized in the name of the Lord, as a witness before him that ye have entered into a covenant with him, that ye will serve him and keep his commandments, that he may pour out his Spirit more abundantly upon you?
